Edge Loop Cut is a commonly used modeling operation that inserts one or more new loop edges—known as "loop cuts"—across the faces of a mesh model along a specific direction. This operation adds geometric detail and provides more appropriate topology for subsequent modeling tasks, such as sculpting, deformation, or subdivision.
Select the edge to be loop-cut, then hold Shift to force a centered cut.

By default, the cut is made from the point closest to the mouse cursor.

You can scroll the mouse wheel or use the control panel in the lower-right corner to specify the number of subdivisions.
